I found the O*NET website which is to help one find their perfect job. So far no luck. I took the skill part and got that I should be a motor boat operator, lol!

Yesterday I was fantisizing a little about what I want to do in life. I had some image of exploring places in far-off European cities, notebook in hand, camera at the ready, pushing my glasses up my nose as I enter a building. I’m not sure what sort of job this would be! If you have any idea, let me know in the comments, please. Meanwhile, here are more ideas if you can piece something out of them, I’d really appreciate it:

According to my Strong Interest Inventory Results from last year, my top five interest areas are:

  1. Politics & Public Speaking
  2. Visual Arts & Design
  3. Religion & Spirituality
  4. Programming & Information Systems
  5. Writing & Mass Communications

Compare that to the 5 Values I got from Job Hunting Made Easy:

  1. Security
  2. Creativity
  3. Family
  4. Change & Variety
  5. Leisure

I put so much emphasis on Leisure because I’m an introvert and need time to recharge my batteries. People, even those I love best, exhaust me mentally after a point. The family bit is because I realized I could not go into the medical field because I really like rountine and knowing when I’ll be off. It is important for me to plan ahead.

I have not been working diligently on my portfolio website (slaps own hand) or projects because I’ve been consumed with trying to figuring out what to do with my life. It’s very difficult. In no particular order, here is the list of occupations I’ve considered doing:

  • Veterianarian
  • Zoologist
  • Animator
  • Astronaut
  • Music Video Director
  • Video Editor
  • Midwife
  • Sex Therapist
  • Fashion Designer/Seamstress
  • Kindergarten Teacher
  • Writer
  • Illustrator

As you can see, I’m really no closer to figuring out what I want to do than I was when I was a kid. I was really into science as a kid (I pretty much had a book on North American Birds on peramanent loan when I was in third grade). I ultimately gave up the science idea because I have trouble with mathematics and I’ll never be athletic enough to be an astronaut.

The second scary confession here (besides the fantasizing above) is that I really don’t care for web design. I like critiquing websites, but not so much designing them. This poses a problem…

Journalist for a freelance online newspaper. That doesn’t seem to connect well with the value of security, but the rest you could make it work with. You’ll need to pick up on some languages if your gonna roam europe though i believe. The music video director sounds hella cool, if it weren’t for the restrictions placed on artistic style. I believe the kindergarten teachers curriculum would choke away too much of the free reign I assume you would desire. Maybe something where you can make videos that you can choose the subject material on, like an indie documentary filmaker. Like the supersize this guy or something like that.

Finding what to do in life could be a consuming task.
Speaking of myself… I’m dividing between all my passions: music, visual arts, programming and writing. And sometimes I ask myself if being linked only to one of these fields could bring more stability and satisfaction to my working life.
But maybe I’m not the kind of guy who could separate things. My strength should be in the union, in the multimedia… in combining different activities, even if it’s certainly more difficult to achieve.

Don’t enrage yourself too much in finding your path now. You have to make the right choices when they will cross your path, but you also have to be instinctive, and sometimes you have to stop for a second to listen to your heart carefully.

I think the journalist could be a cool job for you, since you like writing and “observing the world”… :)

Anyway: thanks for your comment on my blog! ;)
