What I do in my free time

When I’m not working on freelance projects, reading, or expirementing with new things, I indulge in my passion: Link. I won’t post a link here for the time being on what that is, but I’ve been working on it since 2003 with Shiver. Between the two of us we have thousands of drawings and 120+ original characters and I’ve penned over 300 short stories for Link.

Today I’ve decided to share a bit from my latest written piece.

The red dirt twinkled in the mid-day sun as it rose and fell over the small hills and hollows of the countryside. His boots kept a steady pace as he walked the well-worn trail towards the dojo. In the vivid grass that fell and rose with the breeze, he could see small birds darting to and fro, chasing invisible partners. As he got closer, he could hear the high-pitch laughter and squeals of the school’s free period. He shifted his bag to his other shoulder and felt a quickening in his stomach as his anticipation rose.

It had been a little over three years since he had last seen his… his thoughts stopped. He was not sure what his relationship with Khalis could be classified as. Lovers? Most definitely. It had been three years though; she may not be open to receiving his visitation. The trip across the continent to see his family may have been the nail that ended his liaisons with Khalis. In three years, she could have met someone and married. Hell, he reckoned, her family may have moved completely. He had nothing to motivate him to return but the memory of her sad expression as he had left last time. His camp fires in thick forests and on desert roads were tinged with loneliness now that he had not expected. He was a wanderer because the road called to him. It had taken him by surprise to lie under a heat-lightening sky and all he could think of was her. He missed the storm and instead thought of her laugh, her wit, and rising in the mornings at her house with the sunlight yellow through the window as she slept bare under the sheets. So he was returning as if a taste of her could cure his longings.

In a nearby field, a cow lowed. He shielded his eyes with his free hand as he looked towards the sound. The cow’s sisters grazed without looking up, their tails swatting rhythmatically at flies he could not see. Beyond them, a fine barn with sun-bleached walls stood as the highest man-made structure in that direction. He could see goats and a few sheep close to the barn. It was a peaceful sight. Life was plentiful here.

As he made his way up the last rise, he saw a ball come flying down his way, thudding and bouncing in loud smacks across the grass. He stepped quickly to the side and caught the ball without thinking. A shadow fell down the hill and he looked up at a small girl who stood on the apex of the hill. She was frozen, her eyes wide as her short hair and dress blew about her in the breeze. He offered a cautious smile, extending the ball in front of himself.
