Commissioned Drawings for Link

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

I have a weakness for seeing Shiver and my characters interpreted by other artists. Fortunately, I have found many artists who do commissions for a steal! WARNING: One is definitely not safe for work (NSFW). Below are the pictures I have commissioned so far:

Info Skills Needed By Digital Librarians

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

I’ve been holding this article open in my tab browsers for awhile. The author references Tony Hirst’s workshop where I found the following question interesting and not discussed about in my classes so far:

Should the Library be able to help researchers develop their online profiles/reputations within online environments? If so, how? If not, why not?

So far my classes have only been approaching libraries from a traditional approach of spitting out either quick reference answers, making up bibliographies, or pointing people in the direction to find materials. We haven’t began thinking outside the box of how to help researchers become engaged in finding each other. Honestly, this was something I hadn’t even thought about. I’ve been reading several Social Media books (like Social Media 101 and Friends With Benefits) but mostly from the perspective of how can I improve the websites I’m working on presence in the social networking world. I’m taking a library marketing class this fall, but I wonder if my professor even has a good grasp on the importance of making libraries socially engaging online yet.

I love Peanuts and smart graffiti so this was an instant win for me.

Why I Fangirl Joe Biden

It is absolute crap that anyone thinks BP shouldn’t be taking responsibility for not only cleaning up the oil spill but also take care of the wildlife they’ve disturbed as well as the people whose livelihoods they have ruined.

WordPress 3.0

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

I’m very excited that WordPress 3.0 has been released! How this will affect my work related activities is unknown at this point, but I’m hoping it’ll make things easier. The new admin section is monochrome pastel gray/purple which is nice, but I miss my darker gray.

I was looking at new themes for this blog but haven’t found one quite right. I’m even thinking about moving this blog to the main domain at Godaisies.com since I don’t feel too inclined to build a new website from scratch. We’ll see though!

Digitalization Internship Week Two

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Project: Select photos from the University’s archives to go onto a Flickr page. The criteria was to find interesting and/or historical photos.

My selection (ooooh, can I call this–what do you call it when someone selects a collection?) was basically decided upon these factors: the civil rights movement, turn of the century photos, the Brick (?) building before and after the fire, anything particularly striking or funny. I still have 1400 photos to go through and so far I have choosen 69 photos.

I got very ill today while working on the project. The migraine came first and then the nausea. By the end of the fifth hour, I was restraining myself from throwing up on the floor. I blew off all my plans for the afternoon to come home and go to bed. I feel a bit better but I’m beginning to take ill again.

The next project is to digitize some turn of the century student handbooks!

Lightning Starts Gas Fire

The storm last night was pretty loud and vibrant, but this takes the cake.

My New Ikea VIKA AMON Desk

New Desk

I winced at the price tag yesterday, but I’m fully committed to loving this desk. The file cabinets were given to me a few years ago, so all I had to buy was the table top. It measures almost 79″ long by 24″ wide. I’ll be moving into a new room in a couple weeks, but I couldn’t resist putting this together!

Good News For People Who Love News

Monday, June 7th, 2010

I got word today that we’ve been given a green light to go ahead and obtain the new web server for work. With the progress I’ve made on the Drupal website, I’m hoping we can go into Beta by this weekend! Yesterday, I put in 8 hours to finish getting the international translations working, sprucing up the forums, and getting some of the kinks out of the ICL Classes Database. I even got personal contact forms working. So, needless to say, I’m feeling very positive about how this project is going now.

Today, I started my digitalization internship. I was fangirling the Espon ridiculously awesome scanner (price tag: $2,866.49) as I scanned in some theater happenings catalogs from 1969, 1977, and 2006 to turn into PDFs. I’m not 100% certain I did it absolutely right, but this isn’t archival quality so it didn’t matter as much if I was 110% or not. Tomorrow I’m bringing in my own mouse and a pillow since their mouse is too big and the chair is hard as a rock.

I also picked up some more library books so I’m excited all the way around. I’ll be getting offline in a few minutes to go read some books since I’m worn out of looking at a computer screen.

Injury

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Yesterday, I was picking up a package at the Post Office when I tripped over a thing that was haphazardly sticking out onto the sidewalk hidden behind some plants. I don’t even remember falling, just suddenly being on the ground with my hands keeping my face from the concrete and my wallet flung inches away. The lady I was hurrying to bypass (she had 20 or so padded envelopes in hand) asked if I was okay. I said I was fine, as I picked myself off the ground. A gentleman a bit down the breezeway was hurrying forward asking after me too and commented that was “quite the hard fall.” Embarrassed in a way only Dane Cook could vocalize (2:00), I tried to “walk it off” and went aside.
