How to tech out your library without spending dough

Monday, May 17th, 2010

This great list of free and/or open source software from the Librarian in Black can help you outfit your library without spending a dime on software.

I’d like to add Pezi for more interactive and attractive Powerpoint-esque presentations. Also Liquid Planner for running multiple projects. Now, if only I had a smart phone with an internet plan…

Follow me on Twitter

Monday, May 17th, 2010

My Twitter account Godaisies is a mix of personal and professional observations and links. Today, for example, I’ve been tweeting about careers in federal libraries. On my way to D.C. I tweeted observations about the train trip.

I have notifications turned on so I know who follows me, which in turn, allows me to follow you back! :D

50 Years of The Elements of Style

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

While I’m a fan of this little book by Strunk and White, this writer harps on about how this book has damaged the writing of generations of Americans.

So I won’t be spending the month of April toasting 50 years of the overopinionated and underinformed little book that put so many people in this unhappy state of grammatical angst. I’ve spent too much of my scholarly life studying English grammar in a serious way. English syntax is a deep and interesting subject. It is much too important to be reduced to a bunch of trivial don’t-do-this prescriptions by a pair of idiosyncratic bumblers who can’t even tell when they’ve broken their own misbegotten rules.

I have half a shelf of grammar and writing books (I know, I know. I should be reading them!) and The Elements of Style is amongst my reference books. I enjoyed reading it in the car. My favorite grammar book though is Sin and Syntax.

What an e-reader should be

Friday, April 30th, 2010

A great article by R. David Lankes discussing what e-readers should be like.

As for myself, I’ve never had the opportunity to personally handle one—and time is too short right now to do much free grazing reading as I try to force nonfiction works into my grad school life—but I think they’re a fascinating concept. Actually, before I bought my netbook, I was evaluating the idea of purchasing an e-reader instead. However, what I wanted out of an e-reader fell short of my needs, so I went with the netbook instead. I’m glad I did. So here is my list of what I would want out of an e-reader:

Restore Opera Session After Crash

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

My Opera browser crashed on me today, causing much moodiness and stress since I have weeks worth of tabs opened for work. However, thanks to this wonderful gentleman, I am up and running again! The session is 3 days out of date, but that’s close enough! :D

Update on LIS Website Redesign

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

I won a critical battle this week when my boss decided that we would be using WordPress as our content management system for the new LIS website. So far I haven’t done much more work on it since I need my boss to go ahead and purchase the web server space for which our website will be hosted on. Hopefully, she’ll have this done soon. My current challenges working on the website is to make it meet the design specifications as desired by my uh…coworker. The next part is figuring out the structure of the content. I’ll have do all the coding to get the website running since I’m a perfectionist like that, but then I can let my classmate go to town dropping the content in.

I’m running out of time for this project and the Drupal website , but once again, I cannot continue work on till server space is secured.
