I have been updating as much of late because I’ve been pretty busy between school work and my assistantship. Then today I was sending out (what felt like) dozens of emails to various teachers, the county district’s school librarian head, librarians, AND sent in my application for reference internship. I was so wiped out that I came home and slept for a few hours. So onto progress on the two websites I’m doing for my job!

After 8:30pm, it’s very boring and lonely at my isolated work desk, so I sketched two of my coworkers chewing the fat.

So in my new position as ’safety investigator and reporter’ at work, I have invited my coworkers to bring up their safety concerns so I can write up reports and send them to the people who can possibly do something about it. However, as the title of this entry reads, it doesn’t seem to help. So far I’ve gotten zero responses back. Lame. I told my coworker today when he asked that while it’s disheartening, at least there is a paper trail to show that it was reported if something ever happens.
I’m rather enjoying my new responsibilities even as I spent an unmentionable amount of time trying to tack new signage on a forklift that is kept outside. A new manager drove slowly by, staring me down as I applied insane amounts of tape on the seat. He probably thinks I’m into forklift bondage using clear duck tape. However, the sign should resist rain, huzzah!

I’ve had a bit of an amazing week work-wise. Earlier in the week I was worried I might have to work in a store that was in a highly questionable neighborhood. Then I received a phone call from the store that’s two miles from my future house. They need someone to do customer service and wouldn’t you know, I ran customer service for twenty months!
It’s not something I look forward to going back to, but having a guaranteed job is comforting. Now I just need management to release me from my store. I also hope that there isn’t too big of a decrease in pay.
Beyond that, my exciting week has led to me leading my first safety meeting, writing up reports, sending official email updates & instructions to management, driving the heavy power equipment, releasing a statement at the morning, and signing off on paperwork as the safety leader. All the responsibility is exhilarating. I’m going to hate giving it up to go back to being a mere peon at the front.

Today I was given a surprise job interview for the position of loss prevention. AKA the civilian watching you steal and busting you for it.
I had somehow forgotten for the moment that I am leaving soon for grad school. Then my interviewer remembered and asked. Her face fell a little but she went ahead with the interview as practice for me. I did exceptionally well if I say so myself. With zero preparation and on the spur of the moment I gave much better answers than I had for the interview that landed me my current job. After the mock interview she told me in her opinion I could come back to work at this store whenever I wanted. My third anniversary is this August. She said she’ll miss me.
Throughout the day I was bombarded with my coworkers asking if it was true that I am leaving. It’s sinking in bit by bit. Soon this old life will be stripped away and I’ll be left raw. No more will this be my home. I’m stepping ahead on my own two feet to waters uncharted by my family. It’s so painful that somedays I can’t even breathe. I don’t know yet what I’ll miss. What little detail will break my heart.

The Easter Bunny arrived at work today. On my break I went over and had the above photo taken. When I went to pick it up later I found out that the photo lab was using me as their mascot of “good cheer” or whatever for going along with the photoshoot and had taped my photo to the front of their counter. The above photo is a blurry verison of the original photo as taken by my camera phone. The original is pretty nice even wearing my work clothes!

It has been two and a half months since I went to full time (40hrs/wk). I cannot believe how utterly exhausted I still am at the end of the day. This is why my creativity has been non-existent on here since starting the new job. After leaving work, I come home and eat, then catch up on the day’s events online before going to sleep. >_< I don’t think I’m quite cut out to work so much due to the physical and mental drain on me. However, I’m very thankful for my job especially in this economy. I just don’t know how to get my energy back.

I’m sure work is pleased that I had to call out today. My dad was gun ho about taking me until the news showed cars doing 360s on level pavement. We got 3-4″ of snow here, the most we’ve had in probably 11 years minimum. I would enjoy the unexpected snow day more if it had been my day off work instead of making this an absence. It’s actually my third since January (one per month). The first one I was sick and then last month the picture above was a thick sheet of ice instead of snow.

*sigh*
I’ll put away the impending migraine away and later today go think about making a snow angel.

My updates are so exciting.
I realized today that my new position is the happiest I’ve been at a job. No one is yelling at me, I’m left alone, I work mostly alone, I sort things, I process things. It’s good. It’s calming. The best part is that the day flies by. I don’t ever go to lunch early. I usually take it at the last possible moment because I get so involved in my work. My coworkers come by and express pity for me, but then tell me how great Claims is looking. Yeah, that’s my handiwork right there. I’m away from the public eye, management doesn’t bother me, I work away resilently processing. There is also the increase in hours and pay rise. On the other hand, I’m still worn out when I get home.
It’s great.
Then on Tuesday, it will be the second time since 9/11 that I’ll be proud of my country. The first was this past election day. I plan to sit in front of the TV on my lunch break and sob my way through the inauguration. It’s looking to be a pretty good year.

I’m less tired this evening. Today I worked by myself all day. Spent my first hour cleaning up the mess that had accumulated from 3pm to 6am in my open work area. I then took the UPC-less items to the return counter where the department bins are and spent time making labels that said “Needs UPC.” So far, only one sales floor associate honored my request and got the UPCs I needed and brought them to me. Other people keep trying to return them to me but like I told them, I can’t do anything with them w/o the UPC. >_> I then spent the second hour learning how to use a pallet jack and wrapping a pallet. For the rest of the day, I attended various meetings and slowly worked through the bins. The lady whose station is across from mine keeps throwing her junk in my area. It’s going to drive me nuts eventually.

Did get some creative time in at work. Started a sketch of Halide and wrote the beginning of a short story. My coworkers wanted to comisserate over our workplace though, so I put my things away for later.
The best part about today is that I’m still able to keep my eyes open though its 7pm. For the last two days, I’ve been asleep by 6:30. Hopefully in a few more days, I won’t be tired at all.
